Dogtooth Tuna

One of the world's toughest saltwater fish. Over our years of charter operation we have landed some of the largest dogtooth tuna ever landed on lures and jigs. 110kg+ specimens that test angler, tackle and guides to the limit. The first run must be experienced to be believed, the power and speed combined is unlike anything else in the ocean. Brutal and savage, these fish are tough to tame, and in truth involve large amounts of luck to land massive specimens. If they don't bust you off in the reef within the first 60 seconds, there is tackle failure, sharks and massive teeth to contend with.

Lures and jigs must be made super tough to tame these beasts. Dogtooth Tuna lave a surface stickbait, and we have found a lot more success on them with stickbaits than poppers. They will eat a popper, but the hookup rate on poppers is not good. The riptide 200 has proven to be the absolute best surface lure for dogtooth tuna over many years.

When trolling, the DTX minnow in the 200 size was made specifically to handle these monster fish, but the Maverick roughwater 230 size lure has also accounted for many very large dogtooth tuna on the troll. The Gypsy jigs are equipped with 5X strong single hooks and are a favourite shape for big dogtooth.

As far as colours are concerned, it is personal preference, but purples, blacks, sardine and coral trout colours are a favourite. Dogtooth are so aggressive that we believe it is more about lure action than colour, so choose something you like and fish it with confidence!
